FOOD SAFETY SYNERGY 2027

Modern food production is built on increasingly sophisticated science, technologies and systems designed to deliver safe, nutritious and reliable foods. Yet explaining how and why these systems work has become increasingly challenging.

Public conversations about food are often shaped by simple and compelling narratives: “natural” versus “artificial”, “processed” versus “unprocessed”, or perceptions of chemicals and additives. Social media can amplify these narratives rapidly, while the science behind food processing, risk assessment and regulatory decision-making is often complex, nuanced and difficult to communicate in equally accessible terms.

Food Safety Synergy 2027 will bring together experts from regulatory authorities, academia, international organisations, consumer organisations and industry to examine how modern food production can be communicated more clearly, credibly and effectively.

Under the theme “Communicating modern food production in a world of simplified narratives”, the conference will explore the gap between scientific evidence and public perception, how people form views about food and food technologies, and how complex concepts such as food processing, risk, trade-offs and scientific uncertainty can be communicated without either overwhelming audiences or oversimplifying the science.

​

Through expert perspectives, interactive discussions and practical examples, participants will consider how stakeholders can communicate risk assessment more effectively, explain why and how modern foods are produced, and respond constructively to simplified or misleading narratives.

 

The aim is not simply to communicate more, but to communicate better: making robust science understandable and relevant while maintaining transparency, acknowledging uncertainty and trade-offs, and strengthening trust between science, institutions and society.
